Fresno Police Dept. Sgt. Donald Dinell was arrested Tuesday after turning himself in for crashing a police vehicle on Dec. 30 and tested positive for fentanyl. According to Police Chief Paco Balderrama, Dinell stole crystal meth laced with fentanyl from a woman who was involved in a robbery hours before the incident. He faced charges of DUI, drug possession, and robbery. The 20-year police veteran is currently on paid administrative leave but later placed bond.

Balderrama also said Dinell failed to fill out a report about the crash and his body camera did not provide any recorded footage. Police at the scene initially thought he had a medical emergency i.e. a heart attack while behind the wheel but assumed he was exposed to fentanyl after making the alleged drug arrest earlier. They used Narcan to revive Dinell and he recovered hours later.

Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp said in a statement that Dinell was a patrol sergeant for years and didn’t make any arrests.

“As the chief said, (Dinell’s) job duties do not include those types of things where he’s the primary person involved usually with the suspects or the witnesses in the cases. So we have started to audit some of his cases and we will be looking in-depth at the details of all the cases that he has been involved in.”
