Mother of One Dies After Flying to Miami for a BBL, and Her Family Wants Answers

A beautiful 29-year-old mom from New York flew to Miami for a body she hoped would make her feel brand new. Sadly, she never made it back home, and now her family is asking how a clinic with a long paper trail was still open for business.

According to NBC Miami, Jennifer Arias traveled from New York to Miami for liposuction and a Brazilian Butt Lift at New Life Plastic Surgery on August 13. She touched down the day before, and the family says she was on the operating table early the next morning. Hours later, relatives got a call saying she was struggling to breathe. From there, she was rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, but she was already gone by the time her loved ones landed in South Florida.

Her mother, Monica Arias, told the outlet she fought her daughter on this decision. “I told her, don’t do it, don’t do it,” Monica recalled. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death an accident, citing fat embolisms in both lungs as a result of the surgeries. For those who aren’t aware, a fat embolism happens when fat gets into the bloodstream and travels to the lungs, and it is one of the most feared complications of the BBL.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed its Homicide Bureau has an open investigation into her death.

To make this even more unfortunate than it is, local media reviewed civil lawsuits and state and county records and found Jennifer was at least the sixth patient to die following surgery at New Life Plastic Surgery since 2018. Another case involved Naimy Sucetz, 41, who died in 2022 after a tummy tuck and liposuction at the same clinic. The Miami Herald also reported that a Maryland mother, Melecia Green, collapsed and died from a pulmonary embolism less than 40 hours after a tummy tuck and liposuction in December 2022 at New Life, and her family’s wrongful death suit ended in a $325,000 settlement. The Herald reported that the clinic denied the lawsuit’s accusations of improper behavior. Jennifer’s family also says two women who died after procedures at the clinic had the same surgeon.

Jennifer’s story is not an outlier, either. A CBS News Miami investigation found that since 2019, 45 people have died from complications of plastic surgery in Miami alone, and 10 women have died from a fat embolism, a complication commonly seen after BBL surgery. Still, women keep booking flights, lured by quick turnarounds, cash-friendly pricing, and social media feeds that make the whole thing look like a spa day.

The takeaway isn’t to shame anyone for wanting to feel good in their own skin. It’s that “board certified” on a website and a slick Instagram page don’t tell you who is operating, where you’ll recover, or what happens if something goes wrong at hour three. Ask who the surgeon is, check the state records, and find out which hospital is nearby. Your life is worth more than a deposit.

Jennifer Arias was somebody’s daughter, sister, and mother. Her family is still waiting for the full story, and for someone to answer for how it ended.
