In 2019, Rie Hachiyanagi, 50, taught at the Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley and was romantically interested in her colleague, Lauret Savoy. However, Hachiyanagi took things very personally when Savoy didn’t express the same feelings and decided to torture her for four hours. On Dec. 23 of that year, Hachiyanagi arrived at Savoy’s home and claimed she needed to express her feelings regarding a recent breakup. Moments later, she slammed a heavy item against Savoy’s head.
A police report states Hachiyanagi used a fire poker, pruning shears, and a rock to torture her friend of 14 years.

Judge Francis Flannery said the case had a “horrific set of facts” before sentencing Hachiyanagi and said it was difficult to sentence her since she was known as a respected colleague and person with no criminal history.
“But on the other hand, I have this defendant who tried to torture to death over four hours someone who wasn’t an enemy but was a friend. But I still don’t understand. I still don’t see an adequate explanation for what happened,” he continued. “This is one of the most horrific sets of facts I’ve heard and I’m a superior court judge.”
