On Wednesday (September 23), Sampson sat down with Shannon Boodram on her ’LOVERS by Shan’ podcast to talk about founding his racial justice nonprofit BLD PWR, his roles as Nathan in Insecure and Quincy Jones in Michael Jackson‘s biopic, and much more.
During the interview, Sampson, said he doesn’t necessarily accept the title of being “polyamorous” but clarified that he does “believe in it.” He said:
“Can it happen? Yeah. Do I think I’ll be satirized with one person? No. Do I think I can? Do I think I can have a wife? Do I think I can be monogamous? Hell yeah. I can be disciplined…after I f—if I decide on it, I’mma do it. Do I think I can? Yeah. Do I think I can have kids with my wife, and be successful in it? Yeah, I do. I think it would take more effort than I’m wiling to give. I want to put that effort elsewhere. I want to put that effort in these other areas that I’m still not getting right.”
Later, Boodram asked Sampson about solo polyamory. She questioned if he has a label on what he subscribes to when it comes to the values and principles of that particular relationship dynamic community. He admitted he didn’t. He continued to explain:
“I’m not anti. I’m an abolitionist. I think all this should be abolished. America should be abolished. It was an evil project. And I believe in burning things down. I’m anti- a lot of things.”
After listing off a couple of things he’s against, he went back to the original question about solo polyamory. He said:
“It seems incredible. Partnership, when you understand what a real partnership is and how you look for—I mean that sounds incredible. I just look at love differently. In my head, if I’mma have a partnership, I don’t ant a child in there. I definitely want children. I want children with my homegirl. I want my homegirls to know that we ain’t ever gonna have a romantic nothing and the only thing we’re worried about is the health of the child. It ain’t complicated by what I’m feeling, what mood I’m in, how you betrayed me, how you slept with someone, how you cheated. I don’t want the romance—you haven’t been showing enough romance and so now, the kid is suffering? I would rather be in a relationship where we know we got kids, it takes a village, this is the village.”
