The retail giant said customers are still allowed to purchase the but by request only. Walmart currently sells firearms at about half of its 4,700 U.S. stores. Walmart said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press on Thursday: “We have seen some isolated civil unrest and as we have done on several occasions over the last few years, we have moved our firearms and ammunition off the sales floor as a precaution for the safety of our associates and customers.”

While the company did not specify the incidents to which it was referring to, their latest move comes after several days of protests, riots and an overnight curfew in Philadelphia following the fatal police-involved shooting of Walter Wallace Jr., a Black man with a history of mental health problems.

As many are aware, Walmart made a a similar move earlier this year in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd. During that time, there were a lot of peaceful protests but a few violent demonstrations against police brutality and injustice against African Americans.
