Walmart is introducing Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other tap-to-pay payment methods at its stores, marking a major change to the retailer’s checkout experience.
According to CBS News, customers will be able to use Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other contactless payment options at select Walmart locations beginning Aug. 24.
The company plans to expand the feature to all Walmart and Sam’s Club stores by the end of 2026. Walmart also said tap-to-pay will become available at its gas stations by mid-2027.
Company Says Change Will Give Customers More Checkout Options
In a press release announcing the rollout, Walmart said the new payment options are intended to provide customers with greater flexibility when checking out.
“And giving customers and members more choice at checkout is part of a broader effort to make managing and using their money easier,” the company said.
The expansion comes after years of customer requests for additional contactless payment methods.
Apple Pay Joins Walmart’s Existing Payment Options
For years, Walmart encouraged shoppers to use Walmart Pay through the retailer’s mobile app instead of third-party digital wallets.
Many customers, however, continued to express interest in using Apple Pay and other tap-to-pay services already accepted by many competing retailers.
With the phased rollout now underway, Walmart shoppers will soon have access to a wider range of payment options, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other supported contactless payment methods across stores nationwide.
