Lindsay Clancy is currently on trial for the January 2023 murder (by strangulation) of her three children, during an apparent postpartum psychosis. A hospital chaplain — who met with her days after she killed her kids and attempted to take her own life —took the stand on Thursday (August 20) and testified she was “so glad” her three kids were “safe.”
Sheila Cavanaugh — a board-certified chaplain at Brigham and Women’s Hospital — testified that she met with the Massachusetts mother at least 14 times while hospitalized. Their first conversation took place on January 31 after Clancy had been taken off breathing tubes.
Cavanaugh said Clancy recounted a conversation she had with a voice that allegedly told her to murder her children. Clancy allegedly said she was “so glad” they were now “safe.” Cavanaugh recalled Clancy still “covered” with tubes and wearing a neck brace. The chaplain said:
“Her emotional state was very neutral, a flat affect, but I remember vividly the first thing she said to me. We had been praying together, and so when I went in on Tuesday the 31st, she said to me as I held her hand to comfort her, ‘I am so glad my children are safe.’”
The chaplain said she “replied theologically” to Clancy, adding, “Lindsay, your children are safe. They’re safe in heaven with God.” She continued, “And I held her hand throughout that conversation, and we prayed for them.”
Cavanaugh testified that multiple times during their meetings following the killings, Clancy claimed to hear a male voice. Cavanaugh told jurors:
“The voice, according to Lindsay, told her that if she did not follow the command, neither she nor her children would be safe. She alluded to the fact that it was a male voice, and it was persistent.”
