40 school districts across the United States have filed a lawsuit against Facebook, Snapchat, and Tiktok for creating a ‘youth mental health crisis’ and causing harm to children.

Schools nationwide are seeking damages after filing lawsuits against the social media platforms for ‘knowingly causing harm to children’ with their ‘malicious’ algorithms as reported by the Daily Mail. The school districts are located in California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington, Rhode Island, and Iadho.
In response to the lawsuits, social media companies said in a statement that their platforms have parental controls available and are fighting against content that promotes eating disorders, self harm, and suicide.

Experts said there has been an increase in feelings of hopelessness and sadness among teenage girls as the percentage significantly went from 36 to 57 percent within a decade. This also correlates with the rise of suicide attempts as the percentage increased from 19 to 30 within the decade. Additionally, they have blamed the COVID-19 pandemic interrupting daily life and overbearing parents.
The latest lawsuit was filed last week at the Federal District Court in San Francisco County. ‘We allege that Meta, TikTok, Snap, YouTube and other social media companies have engaged in reckless and negligent misconduct that has caused a mental health crisis among our youth. Social media companies are and have been well aware of the harm they cause,’ said Frantz Law Group.
Seattle Public Schools was one of the first to file their lawsuit in January, citing that children’s ability to succeed in school is being affected by mental health issues that are triggered by social media.
