Jennifer and James Crumbley, the parents of the Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley, were sentenced by Judge Cheryl Matthews in Oakland County, Michigan.

The sentencing, which took place this Tuesday, saw both parents receive a term of 10 to 15 years in prison each, with credit for time served. This decision came after two separate juries found them guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the tragic school shooting that occurred on Nov. 30, 2021.

During the shooting, Ethan Crumbley, who was 15 years old at the time, took the lives of four students and injured seven others. The victims included Tate Myre, Justin Shilling, Hana St. Juliana, and Madisyn Baldwin. In a heartfelt statement to the court, James Crumbley expressed his deep sorrow and apologized to the families of the victims, acknowledging the pain and loss they continue to endure. He also emphasized that the full truth about the incident had not been revealed.

Similarly, Jennifer Crumbley shared her remorse and reflected on the anguish and shame she carries for her son’s actions. She expressed her sorrow for the harm caused to innocent lives and the community of Oxford. Throughout the legal proceedings, both James and Jennifer maintained their positions, with Jennifer stating that she would not have acted differently given the chance to change the course of events. Prosecutors argued that the parents could have intervened and prevented the shooting when they were informed about Ethan’s concerning behavior at school prior to the tragic incident.

The sentencing also marked the first time the parents appeared together in court since the beginning of their legal proceedings, which eventually led to their separation.

The trials of the Crumbleys have been significant, as they are the first parents of a school shooter in U.S. history to face trial for their child’s crimes. Ethan Crumbley, who pleaded guilty to a terrorism charge in addition to murder charges, received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
