German Surgeon Fired After Asking A Hospital Cleaner To Help With An Amputation Procedure
Officials at a hospital in western Germany have reported that one of their surgeons has been fired after they learned that he asked a staffer who cleans the hospital to assist in a toe amputation surgery.
The incident occurred back in 2020 at the Mainz University Hospital, and fortunately the surgeon’s actions did not result in any complications for the patient.

Speaking on the incident, the hospital’s chief executive, Norbert Pfeiffer, revealed that the surgeon did not have any qualified assistants available to join him for a routine procedure, so he “wrongly decided” to proceed anyway, using a staffer who cleans the hospital.
It is reported that the surgeon gave the patient a local anesthetic, and when he noticed that they’d become restless, the doctor asked a nearby cleaner to hold the man’s leg and pass him various surgical instruments to conduct the procedure.

As the procedure was being done, a hospital manager ended up finding out about the incident when they saw the hospital cleaner in the operating room, holding bloody gauze pads in his hands. Pfeiffer said, “This should never have happened.”
The hospital has since expressed deep regret over the incident. They also said they believed that the cleaner had taken on a “more active part” in the procedure than he and the surgeon initially had even thought.

They added that if the surgeon would have made it clear that he needed help, officials would have been be able to “easily get support” from some qualified staffers.
Pfeiffer said that the operation had taken place at around 3:30 p.m., when there were several doctors on-hand and available to support the surgeon.

Elsewhere, it is reported that back in January, another German doctor had been sentenced to two years and nine months in prison after illegally issuing more than 4,000 people with exemptions from wearing masks during the coronavirus pandemic.
During the trial, the woman argued that wearing masks was harmful to people’s health. In addition to a three-year work ban, she was ordered to pay $28,000 (or £25,000), which was the total she’d received for issuing the medical exemptions. Meanwhile, her office assistant was fined $2.700 (or £2,400).
