As we previously reported, folks tried to cancel the comedian over his jokes made in his Netflix special “The Closer” where talked and joked about many things while also mentioning the LGBTQ community. Following his wave of backlash, his former high school, Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Georgetown, quietly canceled a fundraiser where he was the guest of honor. The school also paused on renaming a theater after the comedian. Dave’s onstage response to this event cancellation: “They’re canceling stuff I didn’t even want to do,” Uproxx quotes.

Now, despite the cancellation, Chapelle still showed up and allowed some students to confront him about his jokes. It was said that he performed at a surprise Tuesday event, where approximately 580 students gathered in an auditorium for a Q&A with the comedian, where he cracked even more jokes, in response to their questions. One student reportedly shouted at him, “Your comedy kills,” and Chappelle shot back, “N—— are killed every day.” He then asked, “The media’s not here, right?” While responding to another antagonistic question, Chappelle roughly told the student body of artists: “I’m better than every instrumentalist, artist, no matter what art you do in this school, right now, I’m better than all of you. I’m sure that will change. I’m sure you’ll be household names soon,” the news site quotes. The comments were confirmed by Chappelle’s spokesperson Carla Sims, Uproxx notes.

Despite that, the school plans to rename the theater after him:

“On April 22, 2022, we will celebrate one of our most distinguished alumni, Dave Chappelle, by naming our theatre in his honor,” the school wrote. “This theatre naming was the desire of one of our founders, Peggy Cooper Cafritz, who recognized Chappelle as an important thought leader of our time.” “We recognize that not everyone will accept or welcome a particular artist’s point of view, product or craft, but reject the notion that a ‘cancel culture’ is a healthy or constructive means to teach our students how society should balance creative freedom with protecting the rights and dignity of all its members.”
