A wedding took a bizarre turn after the bride died during the ceremony and the groom decided to marry her sister minutes later at the Uttar Pradesh region in India.

The ceremony took place at a village last Thursday when a woman named Surabhi was set to marry Mangesh Kumar. According to The Times of India, the couple was expected to exchange garlands in a jaimala ceremony when Surabhi was feeling ill and suddenly collapsed to the ground. She was rushed to a nearby clinic where a doctor declared the woman died of a heart attack. Surabhi’s brother said the family didn’t know what to do in that situation so they decided to marry off their youngest sister Nisha at the last minute.
“Both the families sat together, and someone suggested that my younger sister Nisha should be married to the groom. The families discussed the matter, and both agreed,” he said. However, Surahbi’s uncle Ajab Singh added that her body was in the next room when the last-minute wedding ceremony occurred.

“One daughter lay dead in one room and the wedding of another daughter was being solemnized in the other room. We have never witnessed such mixed emotions. The grief over her death and the happiness of the wedding has yet to sink in.”
