Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is seeking a harsher sentence for Derek Chauvin based on various factors that occurred during George Floyd’s murder.

According to TMZ, Ellison approached the judge with documents stating Chauvin’s crime was horrific because children were present and watched George Floyd dying on the street. The legal documents state Floyd was in a “very vulnerable’ state due to being handcuffed with his chest pinned on the street while exclaiming ” I can’t breathe!” to the four officers. Ellison also argued Chauvin treated Floyd with cruelty as he consistently ignored his cries for help and kept his knee pinned on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes with an additional four minutes after he died.
The documents also indicated that Chauvin failed to offer Floyd any medical assistance and prevented others from helping him.

Chauvin is currently facing a 40-year prison sentence if convicted for second-degree murder but prosecutors are seeking the maximum sentence based on new evidence and anecdotal details.
