According to the New York Post, the  Cessna 402C aircraft was en route to Australia fro Papua New Guinea when it crashed during takeoff last week and was expected to deliver the drugs in Queensland to a Melbourne-based crime group. The Australian Federal Police said in a statement that the crash occurred between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. and contained 500 kilograms of cocaine.

However, the AFP said they cannot confirm if the weight of the drugs were a contributing factor to the crash. Their statement reads, “The Australian Federal Police (AFP) alleges greed played a significant part in the [crime] syndicate’s activities and cannot rule out that the weight of the cocaine had an impact on the plane’s ability to take off.”

Authorities in Papua New Guinea discovered an empty plane and used police dogs to track down the drugs. No one was injured in the crash and the pilot turned himself into the Australian Consulate on Tuesday. Five members of the crime group were arrested and police say the men, aged 31 to 61, have ties to the Italian mafia and will face life in prison for their involvement in the drug smuggling.
