A San Francisco news anchor was suspended indefinitely after a dispute over a cover story on the massive media coverage on Gabby Petito in comparison to missing indigenous women and women of color.

Frank Somerville, a veteran news anchor for KTVU, was suspended after suggesting that a segment about Gabby Petito should include a tagline about the amount of media coverage missing white women receive over missing women of color and indigenous women. He is also the father of an adopted Black teen daughter and was reportedly told that his suggestion was “inappropriate.”
He learned about his suspension the following day after the dispute but it was unclear how heated the discussion was after he pushed back on management’s comment.

Somerville was also suspended back in May after he was reportedly slurred his words and misread the teleprompter during a live news segment. The company said in a statement that he would take a long leave of absence to focus on his health.
Gabby Petito was laid to rest this weekend after she was reported missing for two weeks. Her fiancee, Brian Laundrie, is apparently missing after refusing to speak to the media or police about her disappearance.
