Nestlé says a massive shipment of KitKat bars has been stolen in Europe, and the missing inventory could impact supply ahead of Easter.
According to CBS News, a truck carrying 413,793 units of a brand-new KitKat chocolate range disappeared last week while traveling between production and distribution locations. The cargo weighed more than 12 tons.
In a statement to Agence France-Presse, a Nestlé representative said, “But it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tons of our chocolate.” The company has not disclosed the full value of the shipment.
Truck Found, Chocolate Still Missing
Reports indicate the stolen truck was later discovered at a factory in central Italy.
However, the chocolate cargo itself remains unaccounted for. Authorities believe the vehicle was en route to Poland before the theft occurred. Investigators are now working to determine how the shipment was diverted and who may be responsible. At this time, no suspects have been publicly identified.
Possible Shortage Ahead of Easter
The timing of the heist has raised concerns.
Easter is one of the busiest seasons for chocolate sales, and KitKat products are expected to be in high demand.
A loss of nearly half a million units could create supply gaps depending on how quickly Nestlé can replace the inventory.
However, the company says there is a tracking mechanism in place.
Each chocolate bar contains a unique batch code, which can be scanned to identify stolen goods if they reappear in the marketplace.
Investigation Ongoing
Nestlé has not confirmed whether insurance will cover the loss or how production schedules may shift in response.
For now, the 12-ton chocolate shipment remains missing. Authorities continue to investigate the disappearance as retailers prepare for one of the biggest candy-buying seasons of the year.
If the chocolate does resurface, it will likely be traced through its batch identification system.
