The Fourth of July is supposed to be about plates stacked with ribs, kids running around playing tag, and music blasting through the speakers. But out in Coney Island late Saturday night, a beautiful summer night turned straight into a nightmare.
What started as a peaceful family cookout ended in pure chaos when a man dressed in all black, rockin’ a ski mask, walked up to a courtyard fence on West 30th Street and just started spraying. By the time the smoke cleared, eight people were hit, including four little boys who were just trying to enjoy their holiday.
The shooting jumped off around 10:35 PM, barely an hour after the neighborhood finished watching the big fireworks display by the boardwalk. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the family was just chilling in the courtyard when the gunman approached out of nowhere. There was no beef, no shouting match, and no warning. He just stepped up, emptied his clip into the crowd, and dipped on foot. Police later found a pistol with an extended magazine and 10 empty shell casings left on the ground, but so far, the shooter is still out there running loose.
The toll this took on our people is heavy. Among the eight wounded are a 21-year-old sister who is currently fighting for her life in critical condition after taking a bullet straight to the chest, a 33-year-old man also hit in the chest, a 25-year-old woman, and a 37-year-old man hit in the shoulder. But what really has the community sick to their stomach is the kids. A 6-year-old boy was shot in the stomach, a 7-year-old boy took bullets to both legs, a 12-year-old was hit in the leg, and a 14-year-old was struck in the thigh.

The block was already on edge after a gang-related homicide happened right there earlier in the week, and detectives are trying to see if this horrific situation is connected to that beef. In a Sunday morning press briefing, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani made it clear that the city isn’t letting this slide. “There is no place for this kind of violence in our city,” Mamdani said, trying to offer some words of comfort to a community that’s hurting. “We will not tolerate it and we will fight it with every tool at our disposal. As we mourn alongside those whose loved ones have been hurt, let us also recommit ourselves to the work of building a city where every celebration is safe and every holiday is joyful.”

Right now, the rest of the victims are listed in stable condition, but the emotional scars left on those babies and that family are gonna take a long time to heal. It’s a tragic reminder that even when the city claims shooting numbers are dropping overall, it doesn’t mean a damn thing when our communities can’t even hold a private family barbecue in peace without somebody pulling up to ruin it.
