Amid the never-ending backlash, India Arie continues to defend herself after condemning Yung Miami’s “Spend Dat” over its lyrical content.
As we previously shared, the R&B and Neo-Soul singer first criticized the song on Threads on June 30. She replied to a social user who was calling to boycott the track about scammers, boosters, and more.
Arie quickly became a target as social media users supporting the song slammed her. However, Arie is no stranger to calling out Black female artists. Three years ago, in July 2023, Arie called out Megan Thee Stallion and Janelle Monáe over their performance at Essence Festival. She wasn’t a fan of them twerking in super short skirts showing off tons of skin. Three years later, India Arie is slamming Yung Miami’s scamming and boosting lyrics.
India Arie And Nicci Gilbert Condemn Yung Miami’s “Spend Dat,’ Trick Daddy And Uncle Luke Defend Fellow Miami Rapper
However, Arie wasn’t the only one to condemn the lyrics. Fellow R&B singer Nicci Gilbert also criticized the lyrics back on June 21 and then again on July 1 after watching Miami receive a standing ovation at the 2026 BET Awards.
Miami Rap legends Trick Daddy and Uncle Luke have since defended Miami and freedom of speech and to be artistic. But as the two rappers go off on the two singers, Gilbert defended herself and Arie and now Arie is again defending herself.
On Saturday (July 4), she took to her Instagram to again clarify that she did not call for a boycott of Miami’s song. She reposted her comments on Threads, along with others defending her. She captioned the post:
“JUST SO Y’ALL KNOW: this is literally all I said, lol YEAH. THATS ALL! Social Media is absurd 😂😂😂😂😂 ~ but I’m actually really enjoying the discourse. I love a world where we’re debating the power of words and music. Apparently, there was a nerve to be hit, and I get the honor of being the lightning rod … AGAIN. @heramazingmindset thank you for this beautiful graphic). Because I am so grateful for those who don’t play about me.”
