At a Wednesday meeting with the country’s ruling party, the leader discussed policy initiatives for the coming year. Kim said Pyongyang would expand its strategic collaboration with “anti-imperialist independent countries,” according to Reuters. The country has reportedly expanded ties with Russia and others, while the U.S. has accused Pyongyang of supplying military equipment to Moscow to aid with the war in Ukraine.

After inspecting the defense posture of the eastern county of Yeoncheon, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol warned of quick retribution if North Korea stirs to action: “I urge you to immediately and firmly crush the enemy’s will for a provocation on the spot,” he said to troops.

Kim also discussed economic goals for the new year as the plan is to accomplish their five-year development plan due to growing concerns about food security. Strict border closures and internal restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted food supply chains and agricultural work, exacerbating the crisis.

However, a Seoul official has expressed concerns that the amount of food aid provided by North Korea is still insufficient to address the country’s chronic food shortages. The 9th plenary meeting of the 8th central committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea began on Tuesday, marking the end of a year in which North Korea solidified its nuclear policy in its constitution, successfully launched a spy satellite, and test-fired a new intercontinental ballistic missile. While these achievements may have bolstered the regime’s image domestically, the pressing issue of food scarcity remains a significant challenge for the isolated nation.
