In a report by VICE News, Toobin allegedly exposed himself during a meeting with members of The New Yorker and WNYC radio. He claims the incident was unintentional and assumed his camera was off before he committed the act. However, the magazine said in an email to staff that Toobin will be suspended immediately after receiving news about the indecent exposure.

“Dear All, As you may have read in various news reports today, one of our writers, Jeff Toobin, was suspended after an incident on a Zoom call last week, Please be assured that we take such matters seriously and that we are looking into it.”

Toobin also stepped down from his role as a legal analyst for CNN and the news station said it was for “personal reasons.” Before his suspension, he wrote for The New Yorker for twenty years and worked with CNN since 2002.

He said in a statement apologizing to his colleagues and his wife regarding the incident along with claims that he didn’t know his camera was off.

“I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake, believing I was off-camera. I apologize to my wife, family, friends, and co-workers,” he said. “I believed I was not visible on Zoom. I thought no one on the Zoom call could see me. I thought I had muted the Zoom video.”
