Bronx rapper Cardi B is back in her political bag as she reminds Americans — especially President Donald Trump and MAGA minions — about the history of our country — notably built off of the backs of Black African Americans and indigenous Americans — ahead of its 250th birthday.
On Friday (July 3), Cardi B spoke with Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper for CNN’s July 4 special ‘Independence Eve Live with Anderson & Andy.’
While Cohen and Cooper stood in Times Square, New York City, Cardi B live-streamed from Essence Festival of Culture down in New Orleans, Louisiana. In a clip that’s going viral, Cardi — who hasn’t shied away from politics or reminding folks about their history — shared how grateful she is for Black African Americans as Caribbean and Latino/Hispanic-American.
For those unaware, Cardi, brown Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, is ethnically Afro-Latina and Afro-Caribbean. The native New Yorker’s background is a mix of Dominican and Trinidadian. Her father is from the Dominican Republic and her mother is from Trinidad and Tobago.
During the live broadcast with Cohen and Cooper, Cardi said:
“I feel like the reason why Caribbeans, like me, Caribbeans, like my family, and Latinos and Hispanic people — the reason why they can thrive in this country is because Black African Americans fought for everybody to be equal. If it wasn’t for them, it wouldn’t be no Caribbeans thriving here. They was the ones that fought for this. So, I’m always gonna be grateful and thankful for that and it’s very important that—it’s important for the history and it’s important to give flowers because somebody wants to erase the history out these schools, but you gotta keep these histories alive. Let me not get too political. I might get in trouble.”
Andy Cohen laughed as Anderson Cooper smiled. Cohen reassured, “You’re not going to get in trouble. We love you so much.”
