Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse Assassinated At Home, First Lady Hospitalized
According to multiple reports citing a top official, Haitian President Jovenel Moïse has died after being assassinated at his home earlier this Wednesday.

Fox News and CNN report that a statement released by interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said that Moïse was killed by an unidentified group, calling the attack an “inhumane and barbaric act.” Some of the attackers were described as Spanish-speaking. To note, the main languages spoken in Haiti are Haitian Creole and French.

While full details have not been released, it was said that the First Lady also suffered bullet wounds and is now hospitalized. The attack on Moïse followed years of protests against his government, and calls for his resignation.
Moïse has served as Haiti’s president since February 2017. The country was due to hold a general election in 2019, but they were postponed. The election is due to take place on September 2021.
