Global Coronavirus Death Toll Surpasses Half Million, Cases Exceed 10M

The Coronavirus is not going away and despite everything opening up around the country, cases are continuing to rise.

Most recently, the global death toll from COVID-19 surpassed 500,000 per data from Johns Hopkins University. As of today, 502,719 deaths have been reported worldwide, with over 100,000 of them located in the United States, which has over 2.5 million cases.

Globally, the figure is at an astonishing 10,189,350 confirmed cases.

“The Americas continues to account for the most cases. For several weeks, the number of cases reported each day in the Americas has been more than the rest of the world put together,” World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

The severity of the virus is finally being acknowledged by the likes of Mike Pence, who finally encouraged the public to wear a mask.

“If your local officials, in consultation with the state, are directing you to wear a mask, we encourage everyone to wear a mask in the affected areas. And where you can’t maintain social distancing, wearing a mask is just a good idea,” Pence said. “And it will, we know, from experience, will slow the spread of the coronavirus.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, called out those who have abandoned safety measures.

“What has happened, I guess understandably, but nonetheless regrettably, [is] that people took the attitude in some places of either all or none. Either you’re locked down, or you just let it fly and you just ignore many of the guidelines of social distancing, masks, avoiding crowds.”
