Lionel Richie had to cut the first night of his much-anticipated tour short, ending the concert just 55 minutes in due to illness onstage.

The 77-year-old superstar was in the midst of performing “Dancing on the Ceiling” at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, when he paused to take a seat on a platform. According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Richie candidly told the audience he was feeling dizzy and noted, “I’ve never performed this song sitting down.”

“When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your a** down,” he quipped, before transitioning to the piano for a rendition of “Three Times a Lady,” after which he unexpectedly took an intermission.

Richie’s five band members remained onstage for approximately 15 minutes, playing recorded music, before exiting. About 40 minutes into the break, saxophonist Dino Soldo addressed the crowd, expressing gratitude for their patience and revealing that Richie was unwell and unable to continue the show.

Footage from the concert, including a clip shared by Star Tribune music critic Jon Bream, showcased Richie taking a moment to rest. Fans had mixed reactions as they left the venue, with one expressing disappointment, stating she was “super bummed” since it was her first time seeing the American Idol judge live. Conversely, another fan expressed her appreciation for his performance, considering his age, and remarked that she “wasn’t surprised he had to sit.”

Just before taking the stage, Richie shared several photos on Instagram, captioning them, “Opening night. 🚀 Rehearsals. Sound check. Showtime tonight.📍Saint Paul, you’re up!!!”
