Deborah Dorbert and her husband, Lee Dorbert, are currently expecting their second child, but have sadly been told by doctors that their unborn, due in a few weeks, has been diagnosed with a fatal fetal abnormality, better known as Potter syndrome.

It is explained that the syndrome is a rare condition related to a fetus’ development in the uterus. The syndrome occurs when the fetus’ kidney abnormally grows and functions — thus affecting how much amniotic fluid surrounds the fetus during the pregnancy.

It is further noted that the condition is sometimes described as a “doubly lethal diagnosis,” being that babies with malfunctioning kidneys cannot remove deadly toxins from their bodies, and that can in turn result in renal failure.

Furthermore, if there is little to no amniotic fluid in a pregnant woman’s womb, the baby may be delivered without the ability to breathe.

The Dorberts claims that doctors told them that they are not able to perform an abortion, unfortunately due to the Florida law that took effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade — which offered the right to an abortion.

It is reported that the law is known as Florida’s Reducing Fetal and Infant Mortality law, which was enacted in July 2022.

Per the new law, an abortion is prohibited after 15 weeks of gestation; and there are only a few exceptions — including one that allows for a later abortion “if two physicians certify in writing that the fetus has a fatal fetal abnormality and has not reached viability.”

In November 2022, the Dorberts received their unborn baby’s diagnosis, and a maternal fetal medicine specialist told them other parents’ decisions. The first was to terminate the pregnancy through surgery or preterm labor, and the second was to continue to full term and later abort.

For the Dorberts, they chose to terminate the pregnancy as early as possible, because babies with the syndrome most times die before they are born or sadly end up suffocating within minutes to hours after delivery.

However, the expecting mother was denied an abortion, and told by a specialist that the earliest she could terminate was between 28 to 32 weeks.

But, after further research regarding the new law — which punishes violating physicians by revoking licenses; ordering fines and sentencing them to 5 years of more — the mother was told she’d have to wait until the 37th week or near full term.

The Dorberts reveal that experts told them they’ll have to deliver their unborn, which will survive “only 20 minutes to a couple hours.”
