Target has issued an apology after social media users slammed the brand for selling an “offensive” kids Halloween costume seemingly resembling “minstrel” and racist “Blackface” imagery.
Target Accused Of Selling Racist ‘Minstrel’ And ‘Blackface’ Inspired Kids Halloween Costume
As we previously shared on Saturday (August 22), social media users called out the mega store over a new listing on its website and app.
The product hit Target’s storefront under the name: “Kids’ Glows under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume Bodysuit.” Hyde and EEK! Boutique made the bodysuit and Target was selling it for $25.
As the product went live, consumers quickly headed to the review section and began leaving one stars and comments blasting Target. The commentary on the Target site and app spilled over onto social media.
Users began accusing the mega store of continuing its controversial behavior. Critics not only called out Target for selling a costume seemingly resembling 19th-century minstrelsy and racist Blackface imagery, but they said they’re not surprised.
Notably, there’s an ongoing boycott on Target — which began after the company discontinued its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives following President Donald Trump’s executive order on diversity programs. Trump signed the order upon his return to the Oval Office in January 2025.
Target Apologizes For ‘Offensive’ And Racist ‘Minstrel’ And ‘Blackface’ Inspired Kids Halloween Costume
Although Target pulled the controversial costume, social media users continued dragging the company while reminding others of the continued boycott. Two days later, Target released a statement apologizing for the controversial costume. While taking to its Instagram on Monday (August 24), Target wrote:
“An apology from us: We removed an offensive Halloween costume that should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer for sale. As a company, we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. We know this is especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners. Removing the costume is an important first step, and we are looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change to ensure this won’t happen again.”
