Former NFL player Cierre Wood has been sentenced to life in prison following the tragic death of his girlfriend’s five-year-old daughter in April 2019 at his apartment in Las Vegas.

The sentencing took place after Wood struck a plea deal with prosecutors, admitting to charges of second-degree murder and felony child abuse in a court proceeding earlier this year.

At 33 years old, Wood received a life sentence for the murder, with the possibility of parole after 10 years. In addition, he was sentenced to serve between 28 months and six years for child abuse, with both sentences to be served consecutively. As part of the plea agreement, additional felony counts of child abuse were dropped. Wood entered an Alford plea, which acknowledges the evidence against him while allowing him to maintain his innocence.

Moreover, his girlfriend, Amy Taylor, 31, also pleaded guilty to similar charges earlier this year in connection with the case. The coroner’s office in Las Vegas reported that the young girl, La’Rayah Davis, died from blunt force trauma on April 9, 2019.

Previously, Wood had played college football at the University of Notre Dame and had brief careers in the NFL with three different teams, as well as the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes.
