As we previously shared, on Tuesday (June 9), a White judge read the verdict after an all-White jury deliberated for less than 3 hours. The jury convicted the Black teen of first-degree murder, leaving him in tears in a Texas courtroom. Hours later, the judge sentenced Anthony — who was 17 at the time of the incident and now 19 — to 35 years in prison. Anthony will be eligible for parole in half that time, 17.5 years. He was previously facing a sentence ranging from 5 to 99 years or life in prison.

Hours after the verdict, Cardi B initially commented on the case. She posted on X:

“Wow! Just freakin wow! DISGUSTING… This is not justice, this is trying to make an example!!!”

Cardi B Calls Karmelo Anthony’s Murder Conviction And 35-Year Sentence ‘Excessive’

On Wednesday (June 10), Cardi ended up addressing Karmelo Anthony’s conviction and sentencing again. While taking to X Spaces, she said she understood the heartbreak and grief of both families as a parent. She said she empathizes with Metcalf’s parents, who “lost a child,” but also with Anthony’s parents, who “lost a child to the system.”

While addressing the facts of the case, Cardi described Anthony as a young boy “that was not raised in the trenches.” She continued to show emotion for him after his sentencing, arguing that his reaction — breaking down in tears after the verdict — didn’t match that of someone who had intent to murder.

“They had the option of giving him manslaughter because clearly this wasn’t planned to be murder. They just probably feel like, ‘You know what? We hungry, we tired, I ain’t trying to come back tomorrow. Here’s what it is.’ No thought, no care, no nothing. No consideration, no seeing how this boy—he never went to jail, was a good kid, was active in school. 35 years I really feel like is excessive, extremely excessive.”

Cardi also said she’s not one to always pull the race card, but says the way this case played out was absolutely based upon race. She insisted that if the races were reversed, the case would have definitely been handled differently.

As she continued to call out the role race played in this case, she shared what she will now tell her two young boys.

“This is America. I sure learned something from this. I learned to tell my sons: do not argue with no White boys, ‘cuz baby ain’t no law protecting you if something goes down with them … Just walk away.”
