#BlackOutTuesday: Industry Leaders Vow To Pause Business For A Day Of Observation

Today is not a break. #BlackoutTuesday is a day where leaders around the world put a pause on conducting business, as usual, to focus on fighting racial injustice.

Instead of seeing content that is not related to what’s going on in the country following the tragic death of George Floyd, many people including celebrities like Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Keyshia Cole, Tyrese and major entertainment companies, such as Walt Disney Co., Netflix Inc., Spotify Technology SA, and Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group — have all agreed to encourage their audience to use this time to reflect, educate themselves, re-connect with their communities, and also to share helpful information.

Today, we will continue to do what we’ve always been doing: share pertinent information for protestors, bail organizations, resources along with reading materials about race/racism, and to continue to uplift our audience during these tough time. We will also continue to demand justice for Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and every other black man or woman who had their life taken due to police brutality or racism. Organizers of #BlackoutTuesday are asking participates not to hashtag Black Lives Matter while posting the black picture on their social media as it will black out the feed and hide important content that needs to be shared.

Here are examples of how music and entertainment leaders are using their platform on #BlackOutTuesday:

It’s hard to know what to say because I’ve been dealing with racism my entire life. That said, it’s rearing its ugly head right now & by God it’s time to deal with it once & for all. My team & I stand for justice. Conversations will be had & action will be taken. #THESHOWMUSTBEPAUSED For all of my friends in the blind and differently-abled communities, here’s the text that is included in this image: “MUSIC INDUSTRY BLACK OUT TUESDAY Due to recent events please join us as we take an urgent step of action to provoke accountability and change. As gatekeepers of the culture, it’s our responsibility to not only come together to celebrate the wins, but also hold each other up during a loss. Join us on Tuesday JUNE 2 as a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community. #THESHOWMUSTBEPAUSED”
