Wisconsin School District Bans Pride Flags And Pronouns

A school district has banned employees from displaying pride flags or using their preferred pronouns in email signatures.

Stephen Plum, superintendent of the Kettle Moraine School District, told the local school board that the decision was made after the district implemented a previous policy. As reported by Huffington Post, Plum explained that school administrators and teachers are prohibited from using their positions to promote political or religious messages and propaganda for monetary, personal, or nonmonetary gain.

Additionally, he said the policy prohibits any political or religious messages in their classrooms or attire, including Black Lives Matter, pride flags, and We Back The Badge signs. Staff is also not allowed to mention their preferred pronouns in emails. However, the reinforced policy has received backlash from students and employees.

“This isn’t a case where we’re trying to discriminate against any group or groups for that matter, but rather just to bring clarity to allow staff to know where the line is drawn on these various things. It’s not a popularity contest. Regardless of what we do here, we’re going to have some that are going to love it, some that are going to hate it. Regardless of that, I think it’s the right thing to do. I’m fully behind it,” said Kettle Moraine School Board President Gary Vose. However, former Kettle Moraine High School teacher Trey Korte said they didn’t agree with the policy of banning pride flags from the classroom. He taught English at the school from 2009 to 2019.

“When you remove something that had been there awhile that represented a marginalized group, when you take that away, it does make people feel unwelcome,”

Social media reacts to the school district’s policy

Twitter was divided on the decision as people assumed school staff wouldn’t be able to use any pronouns. However, most didn’t agree with the district banning pride flags.
