Months after the shocking Oscars slap with Chris Rock, Will Smith is finally speaking out to address the wild moment.

In a video titled,” It’s been a minute,” Will explains that “over the last few months, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and personal work. You asked a lot of fair questions that I wanted to take some time to answer.”

The first question Will read was, “why didn’t you apologize to Chris Rock during your acceptance speech?” Will explained that after he smacked the comedian over a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, “he fogged out by that point.” He went on to say, “It’s all a fuzzy. I want to apologize to Chris’ mother, to Chris’ family, especially his brother Tony Rock.” He added, “This is probably irreparable.”

“Disappointing people is my central trauma. I hate when I let people down, so it hurts psychologically and emotionally to know that I didn’t live up to people’s image and impression of me,” he explained. “The work I’m trying to do is I am deeply remorseful, and I’m trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself.” Speaking about how the whole thing went down, Will Smith added, “I know it was confusing. I know it was shocking, but I promise you I am deeply devoted to putting light and love and joy into the world,” he concluded.

What The Heck Happened?

As we previously reported, during the live show, Rock was presenting the award for Best Documentary when he made a joke about
Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s appearance although she suffers from alopecia. “Jada, I love you. GI fane 2, can’t wait to see you,” he quipped in an apparent reference to
the actor’s shaved head. In response, Will socked him right in the face. Chris Rock declined to file charges. However, as a result, the Academy decided to ban Smith from its membership for 10 years because of the slap. The actor resigned from the organization prior to the ban announcement.
