On Monday (June 19), Atlanta Police Department officials reported that there were two men shot at the Villages at Carver apartments on 201 Moury Avenue, leaving one person dead.

Germain Dearlove, the Commander of the APD Homicide Unit, said that the scene of the crime, moments before, had been a place where people were gathering to hold a vigil for two teens that were shot and killed last year at the same apartment complex, near the 200 block of Moury Avenue SE near Prior Road SW.

The teens were identified as 18-year-old Nyriek Olds and 17-year-old Jamarquez McCrary.

On the day of the two teen’s vigil, Atlanta Police received reports of a person being shot at around 6:30 p.m. Commander Dearlove said, “It was a homicide investigation from last year that was solved.” He confirmed the person responsible in that case was arrested. They were then-identified as Darshae Barnes Jr.

The Commander continued to explain, “I believe they were here[at the vigil for that victim for that case. It appears a dispute occurred at this location and that’s what led to the shooting.”

Additionally, the Atlanta Police Lieutenant confirmed that upon arriving to the scene, officers learned that two men were shot at the location. One of the men was found dead at the scene, and they found that the other victim had been injured.

The surviving victim was then rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, with the Commander adding that the survivor was “conscious and breathing,” at the time. The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Also speaking out was a witness on the scene named Sabrina McGhee. She said, “They were at a balloon release for one of their friends and another friend ended up getting murdered.” She added, “The kids need to put the guns down because there’s too much senseless killing. I don’t know what the reason was, but there’s too many killing going on with these kids.”

According to FOX 5 Atlanta News, some of their team members on the scene arrived to the location and saw a large section of the parking lot taped off for the police investigation. Shortly after, the FOX 5 crew saw one person being walked off the scene in handcuffs.

Then, as the officers on the scene were investigating the double shooting, officials soon heard what sounded like shots being fired. When they scoured the area to find the source of the presumed shooting, they said they could not immediately find anything. Shortly after, a second person was taken into police custody.

The names of the two suspects captured that day have not yet been released, nor is it fully clear if either of them would be charged in connection to the shooting. Since the incident, the Atlanta Police Department’s Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate.
