A Texas family is distraught after learning that a vet accidentally put their cat to sleep during a routine check-up.

CNN reports Nicole Olsen and her husband checked their 8-year-old cat named Sophie for a checkup and rabies shot at the Surburbia North Animal Hospital in Houston. Unfortunately, the couple received a disturbing call regarding the appointment after heading home with their beloved cat.

“It was the doctor herself calling saying, ‘Please get Sophie back here immediately, we gave her euthanasia instead of a rabies vaccine,'”

After the call, they rushed back to the hospital immediately so the hospital staff could save Sophie’s life.

“I immediately took her out of her cat carrier and I held her, talked to her, because I knew that was going to be the last thing she would remember. I knew she wasn’t going to come back at that point. I just knew it. She pretty much was dying in my arms.”

Sophie was given oxygen and fluids to remove the drug from her system but it was too later. She died two days later. Although the hospital apologized, Olson says they should have paid more attention to prevent these accidents.

My main concern is not to bash them at all, just want to make public aware to be vigilant, ask questions that you didn’t think you had to ask of your veterinarian so this doesn’t happen to anyone else,”
