San Diego Comic-Con kicked off this weekend and director Ryan Coogler pulled up to Marvel’s legendary Hall H panel to drop the news we’ve all been waiting for: Black Panther 3 is officially on the way, and the suit will be filled by Jonsson, the British actor.
He’s been quietly blowing everyone away in projects like Alien: Romulus and Industry. Now, he’s stepping into the suit to play an adult Prince T’Challa II, the son of our forever King, played by the late, great Chadwick Boseman.
The reveal was an emotional, high-energy moment as Coogler took the stage alongside Marvel chief Kevin Feige, Letitia Wright, and Winston Duke. Reminding the crowd where the story left off in Wakanda Forever, Coogler reflected on the legacy of Chadwick’s character and how the franchise will push forward.
<blockquote>”The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played, our T’Challa, in that film,” Coogler shared with the roaring audience. “And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up and he comes of age.”</blockquote>
Stepping out to a massive standing ovation with chants of “Wakanda Forever” echoing through the convention center, Jonsson gave a humble and deeply appreciative address. “Thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin, thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” the 32-year-old actor told the crowd. “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honor is entirely mine.”
Fans have been theorizing for years about how Marvel would handle the transition after Shuri carried the mantle, and handing the suit over to T’Challa’s grown son feels like the ultimate full-circle homage to Boseman’s legacy.
Already fans are rallying behind Jonsson, who has proven time and again that he possesses the exact charm, and raw talent needed to carry a blockbuster of this magnitude. With Black Panther 3 locked in for a December 15, 2028 theatrical release, Wakanda’s future is officially secured, and we already know this next chapter is going to be pure magic.
