The charge was announced Friday afternoon by Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. It came just shortly after news broke that Chauvin had been arrested. The three other officers involved in the May 25 killing have not been arrested or charged. No further details were shared but Freeman said during the news conference that he didn’t want to wait to share the news.

“He has been charged with third-degree murder. We are in the process of continuing to review the evidence. There may be subsequent charges later,” he said.
“I didn’t want to wait any longer to share the news,” Freeman said. “The investigation is ongoing. We felt it appropriate to focus on the most dangerous perpetrator. I must say this case has moved with extraordinary speed.”

A third-degree murder charge means homicide without intent but with disregard for human life, according to The Daily News.

As we previously reported, Floyd died at just 46-years-old on Monday after he was confronted on suspicion of forgery. He was handcuffed and pinned to the ground with Chauvin’s knee pressed to his airway for nearly eight minutes. He lost consciousness and later died after being taken to an area hospital.
