The girls, aged 9 and 4, stole the vehicle while their parents were sleeping and drove ten miles from their home in West Jordan towards West City Valley. According to CNN, the 9-year-old girl who was behind the wheel attempted to exit the freeway when hopped the median and crashed into the semi-truck. Officers were called to the scene around 5 a.m. and bodycam footage recorded their reaction when one of them learned the children were the driver and passenger in the red four-door sedan. There were no reported injuries in the aftermath of the accident.

A spokesperson from the West City Valley Police Department said the girls told police they wanted to take the 700 mile trip to California so they can go for a swim.
