Christa Gail Pike, 50, remains alive after two rounds of lethal injection. Earlier today, we shared that Pike — the woman convicted in the 1995 torture killing of Coleen Slemmer — would get a stay of execution. The decision arrived within one hour of her scheduled execution. This morning she was due to be executed by lethal injection, but received a stay.
Hours later, the Supreme Court overturned the last-minute stay of execution. The court ordered the Tennessee inmate to be put to death by lethal injection. Now, it is reported that after the second lethal injection attempt, Pike remains alive.
According to reports, during the second attempt, she was administered two lethal injections of Pentobarbital. It is a short-acting barbiturate typically used as a sedative, a preanesthetic, and to control convulsions in emergencies. However, when used in euthanasia or lethal injection, it causes death within 15 to 30 minutes.
Tennessee Death Row Inmate Christa Pike Still Alive After Two Doses Of Lethal Injection
After the failed lethal injection attempts, Pike’s lawyer is again seeking to halt her execution. Witnesses said “executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring.”
They said “Pike has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat.” They also said that curtains to the death chamber “have gone down twice.”
Pike was 18 when she murdered her classmate. She would be the first woman in the state of Tennessee to be executed in more than 200 years.
