Kim Kardashian has reacted after Tennessee prison officials struggled to find a vein for lethal injection of a death row inmate she’s been fighting to help exonerate. As we previously shared, on Wednesday (May 20), Kardashian took to her Instagram Story, fighting to halt the execution of Tony Carruthers, 57.
She previously spoke on his case the week before. In her post, she again advocated for Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to intervene and save Carruthers from execution. He was convicted of killing three people in 1994 in an infamous case.
According to prosecutors, Carruthers and James Montgomery committed the murders on February 24, 1994 as part of their plan to take over a drug trade in their Memphis neighborhood.
Kim Kardashian Reacts To Tony Carruthers’ Failed Lethal Injection And Tennessee Governor Bill Lee Granting One Year Reprieve
Since his conviction and death sentencing, Carruthers has been fighting to have testing done on forensic evidence and fingerprints that his attorneys argue could exonerate him. After the American Civil Liberties Union and Kim Kardashian caught wind of his case, they’ve all been calling on Gov. Lee to stop his execution and grant him testing.
However, Gov. Lee has rejected their calls, resulting in the scheduled Thursday morning (May 21) execution of Carruthers. But when the time came, prison officials had difficulty administering his dose of lethal injection — saving his life… for now. While reacting to news of “Carruthers avoiding execution due to complications,” Kardashian wrote, “God was intervening!!!”
In a second post to her Instagram Story, Kardashian reacted to Gov Lee granting Carruthers a one-year reprieve after the failed lethal injection attempt. Kardashian wrote:
“Due to the IV administrator failing to find a vein, they were unable to move forward with the execution. This is absolute torture!!! Governor Lee has now granted Tony Carruthers a one year reprieve. Thank you to everyone who took the time to call his office. I truly believe the pressure from all of us helped. Hopefully they will now move forward with testing the DNA evidence. Putting a man to death without even DNA testing to be sure is absolutely inhumane!!!”
