Shanghai Airport Has Massive COVID-19 Outbreak ‘Following Contact With Cargo From North America’
A Coronavirus outbreak in Shanghai’s biggest airport has left the facility in chaos as officials panicked to administer mass tests on Sunday night.
The outbreak was traced back to two cargo handlers who cleaned a container that had just arrived from North America. Video on social media shows people in hazmat suits trying to contain masses of people overnight.
The Washington Post reports that Hundreds of flights were canceled at Shanghai’s Pudong International airport, which is one of the world’s busiest airports. On Sunday, 17,000 employees were sealed tightly inside the’s airport for testing. As of now, 11,544 results came back negative.
“Arrangements will be made for high-risk workers to get a coronavirus vaccine for emergency use, under an informed consent basis,” said Zhou Junlong, vice president of Shanghai Airport Group.
Despite the Coronavirus pandemic initially starting in China in late 2019, their discipline and rigorous lockdowns have managed to bring infections down. Over the past months, there have been little to no Coronavirus cases being reported, whereas the United States has been peaking over 100,000 cases a month.
