A few days before the Oscars, the Razzies created a special category to their original lineup titled “Worst Performance By Bruce Willis in 2021” in reference to the actor’s recent direct-video films from last year. However, the organization faced backlash online after Rumer Willis revealed on Instagram that her father was stepping down from acting due to his aphasia diagnosis.

In a tweet, the Razzies wrote: “The Razzies are truly sorry for #BruceWillis diagnosed condition. Perhaps this explains why he wanted to go out with a bang in 2021. Our best wishes to Bruce and family,” and added in a follow-up tweet that they learned about the news around the same time as “everyone else.” Due to the backlash, the organization issued an official statement and apologized after reportedly standing by its comments.

“After much thought and consideration, the Razzies have made the decision to rescind the Razzie Award given to Bruce Willis, due to his recently disclosed diagnosis. If someone’s medical condition is a factor in their decision making and/or their performance, we acknowledge that it is not appropriate to give them a Razzie,” the Razzies said in a statement to IndieWire.
As previously reported, Bruce Willis will be stepping down from acting due to the condition affecting his speech and cognitive abilities.
