Queen Elizabeth II has died, the royal family announced on Thursday. The Queen, who just turned 96 years old in April, had apparently left her doctors in a “concerned” state about her health, a statement by Buckingham Palace said hours prior to the announcement of her passing.

She had been staying at her Balmoral Castle in Scotland to rest for the past couple of days, with all of her immediate family members having rushed to her side once news of her declining condition had been confirmed.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the Palace shared in an official statement on Twitter.

Earlier in the day, the Palace left a lot of people worried when a tweet from its Twitter account revealed, “Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.”

It was just in October when the Queen was rushed to the hospital for an overnight stay that saw her miss out on a handful of public events, prompting doctors to initiate a request to have Her Majesty clear her royal commitments and fully rest.

It was believed that the death of her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in April last year, had played a significant part in the Queen’s health deteriorating as she also noticeably began to make lesser public appearances.

Queen Elizabeth II, who is the longest-ruling monarch in British history, took to the throne back in 1952 when her father, King George, died.

According to BBC News, her son Charles, the Prince of Wales, has immediately become King without ceremony to the heir, though there’ll still be several traditional steps he must go through before taking on his new title. His name will likely be known as King Charles III.

Prince Harry was among the royal family members who rushed to Scotland to be by the Queen’s bedside before her death but reportedly touched down 15 minutes after her passing at the Aberdeen airport, per Daily Mail. Kate Middleton is said to have stayed in Windsor to take care of her and Prince William’s children, Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte following their first day in school, while Meghan Markle remained in London.

The Queen leaves behind her children, Princess Anne, Charles, Prince Edward, Prince Andrew, and her grandchildren, Prince Harry, Prince William, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Zara Tindall, Lady Louise Windsor, Peter Phillips, and James Viscount.
