President Donald Trump has nominated former U.S. Deputy Surgeon General Dr. Erica Schwartz to be the director and lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

On Thursday (April 16), President Trump announced the appointment as the CDC continues to face a tumultuous run during Trump’s second term. Notably, the CDC had a permanent director for just one month last August, and has been without a permeant figure ever since.
Trump took to Truth Social and made the announcement. He wrote:
“I am pleased to announce the new leadership of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is my Honor to nominate the incredibly talented Dr. Erica Schwartz, MD, JD, MPH, as my Director of the CDC. Erica graduated from Brown University for College and Medical School, and served a distinguished career as a Doctor of Medicine in the United States Military, the Greatest and Most Powerful Force in the World, and then served as my Deputy Surgeon General during my First Term. She is a STAR!”
Trump also revealed his picks for the three top health positions: Sean Slovenski — a healthcare industry executive who is now the CDC’s Chief Operating Officer; Dr. Jennifer Shuford — Commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services who is now the CDC’s Chief Medical Director; and Dr. Sara Brenner — the Principal Deputy Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) who is now Senior Counselor for Public Health. Dr. Brenner will help Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Trump wrote:

I am also pleased to announce the appointment of Sean Slovenski as the CDC Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Jennifer Shuford, MD, MPH, as the CDC Deputy Director and Chief Medical Officer, and Dr. Sara Brenner, MD, MPH, as Senior Counselor for Public Health to Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

RFK Jr. also thanked President Trump on X for nominating Dr. Schwartz as CDC Director. He wrote:
