Madonna, 68, is set to make her return to the MTV VMAs stage, where she is set to open the 2026 show! This will mark Madonna’s first live performance at the show in 23 years! Coincidentally, it’s also the Material Girl’s first time back since she opened the show and famously locked lips with Pop princesses Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera in 2003.
Ahead of this year’s MTV VMAs, Madonna has received 11 nominations following the release of her latest — and No. 1 — album, ‘Confessions II.’ Furthermore, the achievement places her ahead of Taylor Swift, with nine nominations, and Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter, each with seven nods.
Madonna’s nominations include:
- Video of the Year: “Confessions II – The Film”
- Artist of the Year: Madonna
- Song of the Year: “Bring Your Love” (with Sabrina Carpenter)
- Best Collaboration: “Bring Your Love” (with Sabrina Carpenter)
- Best Dance: “Confessions II – The Film”
- Best Direction: “Confessions II – The Film”
- Best Art Direction: “Confessions II – The Film”
- Best Cinematography: “Confessions II – The Film”
- Best Editing: “Confessions II – The Film”
- Best Choreography: “Confessions II – The Film”
- Best Visual Effects: “Confessions II – The Film”

While heading into another season at the VMAs, Madonna arrives with 19 career wins. Furthermore, she previously led nominations twice. In 1990, she had nine nominations for “Vogue.” Additionally, she had another nine nods for “Ray of Light” and “Frozen” in 1998.
The 2026 MTV VMAs will be hosted by Snoop Dogg and air live from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theatre on Sunday (September 27) at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT. While the ceremony will be simulcast on CBS and MTV, it will also be available globally the next day on Paramount+ and MTV.
