Over 120 People Dead & Another Hundred More Injured In Riot At Indonesian Football Match; League Now Suspended

According to several national and international outlets, at least 127 people have been killed and another 180 or so have been injured in a riot that broke out during an Indonesian football match. The league is now suspended.

Reportedly, a riot broke out at an Indonesian Liga 1 football match between Arema and Persebaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang. It is reported that Persebaya won the match over their rivals Arema in the East Java Derby, 3-2.

Following the win, it is reported that several upset fans began to invade the pitch after the full-time whistle was heard. 

Subsequently, riot police responded to the mayhem by using tear gas inside of the stadium.

Since the incident, shocking footage has since gone viral on social media. Videos show fans climbing over fences to escape the smoke and rioting.  Other reports claim security guards even had to hit and kick fans to keep them from rushing onto the field.

Health officials, like Wiyanto Wijoyo — who is the head of the Malang Regency Health Office — claims that the number of deaths is worry-some.

Wijoyo said, “[There are] more than 120 people who died of chaos, overcrowding, trampling and suffocation.”

Adding, Akhmad Hadian Lukita, who is the President of the PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB), said, “We are concerned and deeply regret this incident. We share our condolences and hopefully this will be a valuable lesson for all of us.”

As mentioned, the league has now been suspended following the tragic incident. Immediately following the rioting, it was reported that the remaining Liga 1 matches that were scheduled for the following weeks have been postponed until further notice.

The Indonesia FA (PSSI) President, Mochamad Iriawan released a statement and announced that Arema is no longer permitted to host any home games for the remainder of the season.

Iriawan said, “PSSI regrets the actions of Aremania supporters at the Kanjuruhan Stadium. We are sorry and apologise to the families of the victims and all parties for the incident. For that PSSI immediately formed an investigation team and immediately left for Malang.”

Furthermore, the official Twitter account for Persebaya stated, “Persebaya’s extended family deeply mourns the loss of life after the Arema FC vs Persebaya match. No single life is worth football. We pray for the victims and may the families left behind be given strength.”
