Italian Woman Found Dead, In Mummified State, & Seated At Table For Two Years
Better care of older people is being called for after an Italian woman was found dead and seated at a table for more than two years — in a mummified state. Officials say the woman, identified as Marinella Beretta, had no living relatives.
Beretta’s neighbors hadn’t seen her since September 2019 — at least two and half years. They assumed she moved at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Police ended up discovering Beretta’s remains inside her Prestino home, which is in Northern Italy, near Lake Como in Lombardy. It’s reported that officials originally went to make a house call to warn her and fellow residents of high winds in the area.

Lake Como Mayor Mario Landriscina has asked all residents to attend Beretta’s funeral. The local government will also take care of all expenses. In a 2018 report by the national statistics institute, nearly 40% of Italians over 75-year-old live alone. In response to the shocking discovery, family minister Elena Bonetti says, “What happened to Marinella Beretta in Como, the forgotten loneliness, hurts our consciences. We have a duty, as a community that wants to remain united, to remember her life … no one must be left alone.”
