Big news hitting the fashion world: After fourteen amazing years, Olivier Rousteing, the man who made Balmain the heartbeat of modern luxury, is officially stepping away from the French fashion house.

Rousteing broke the news in a Wednesday statement, saying,
“Today marks the end of my Balmain era. Sixteen years ago, I began this Balmain adventure without knowing what the future would hold.”
Since joining Balmain back in 2009 and becoming creative director in 2011 at just 25 years old, Rousteing completely changed the game. He wasn’t just designing clothes, he was rewriting the rules of what luxury could look like. Under his vision, Balmain went from a traditional Parisian couture house to a bold, global movement that mixed Black excellence, celebrity culture, and high fashion in ways the industry had never seen before.
He continued, “What an extraordinary story it has been — a love story, a life story. None of it would ever have been possible without my chosen family, my team, the group, and all the people who believed in me from the very beginning.”
From Paris to Pop Culture: How Olivier Rousteing Made Balmain a Global Phenomenon
When Rousteing took over the brand, many questioned whether someone so young and so unapologetically different could carry such a legacy label. But he proved every single doubter wrong.
Balmain became the celebrity brand of the 2010s, dripping with gold embellishments, sharp shoulders, and that signature Paris-meets-streetwear energy. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, and Gigi Hadid weren’t just wearing Balmain, they were the Balmain Army… literally.
And let’s not forget the collabs. The Balmain x H&M collection? That was history. Fans camped out overnight around the world just to get a piece of that glitz.
Rousteing also made waves by using his platform to push for inclusion and diversity in fashion not as a marketing trend, but as a personal mission. As one of the few Black creative directors in luxury fashion, he made sure Black and brown models weren’t just on the runway, they were center stage.
“Like Every Story, This One Has an Ending”
“Like every story, this one also has an ending. Thank you for your support, your love, and for having lived, season after season, this beautiful Balmain journey with me. Thank you to Mayhoola for the support and for all the memories that will remain forever engraved in my mind.”
Under Rousteing’s leadership, Balmain became a social media juggernaut. He turned runway shows into viral spectacles, brought couture to Coachella, and made the Balmain aesthetic synonymous with power.
He even turned personal pain into strength, like the time he returned to the runway after surviving a severe burn accident in 2020. His transparency about that experience earned him even more respect from fans and industry peers.
Looking Ahead: “A New Era, A New Beginning, A New Story”
“Thank you to my team, without whom none of these incredible adventures could have existed. I arrived at 24 with my eyes wide open and the determination to persevere, always.
Today, I leave the House of Balmain with my eyes still wide open — open to the future and to the beautiful adventures ahead, adventures in which all of you will have a place. A new era, a new beginning, a new story.”
While he hasn’t yet revealed what’s next, Rousteing’s next move is already being watched closely. Whether it’s launching his own label, exploring film, or reinventing another fashion house, one thing’s for sure — he’s not done shaping culture.
