Tres Genco,22, pleaded guilty earlier this week to one count of attempt to commit a hate crime. According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio, Genco identified as an “involuntary celibate” or an incel and participated in online forums that supported the “cause.” The incel community is predominately male and considers themselves unattractive to women.

Genco frequently used the website from July 2019 to March 2020, creating multiple online profiles and detailing in one post how he would spray some couples or single women with orange juice in a water gun. He also expressed feelings of slaughtering “women out of hatred, jealousy, and revenge,” referring to death as “the great equalizer.”

“As part of this investigation, law enforcement agents discovered a note of Genco’s that indicated he hoped to “aim big” for a kill count of 3,000 people with a reference to the same date as Elliot Rodger’s attack and intended to attend military training. The investigation revealed that the day he wrote his manifesto, he searched online for sororities and a university in Ohio.”

Investigators said Genco purchased weapons and other items in preparation for the mass shooting.

The news release said he purchased tactic gloves, a bulletproof vest, a hoodie with the word “Revenge”, a bowie knife, cargo pants, a skull facemask, two Glock 17 magazines, and a 9mm Glock 17 clip plus a holster in 2019. Genco also attended Army Basic Training between August and December but was later discharged for “entry-level” performance and conduct. Last year, he visited an Ohio university and searched for topics about planning a shooting or the criminal aspects of shooting.

In March 2020, deputies from the Highland County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from his home and found multiple loads of ammunition and a firearm.

“Inside the residence, police officers found a modified Glock-style 9mm semiautomatic pistol, with no manufacturer’s marks or serial number, hidden in a heating vent in Genco’s bedroom. As part of his plea, Genco admitted that he possessed both firearms in furtherance of his plot.”
