An NYC driver who has racked up 160 violations has been recently sentenced to 9 years in prison after a crash he caused killed a three-month-old. Speaking inside the Brooklyn Supreme Court during his sentencing hearing, the man said, “I really didn’t mean it.”

According to reports, the reckless driver has been identified as 30-year-old Tyrik Mott. Back on September 11, 2021, Mott was first accused of being in a fatal hit-and-run that killed 3-month-old Apolline Mong Guillemin. The crash also seriously injured her mother.
The incident occurred on a sidewalk in Clinton Hill, New York, where Julien Mong and Marion Guillemin were pushing their daughter in a stroller. It is said that Mott was driving away from police after failing to stop at a red light. He ended up gong down the wrong way on Gates Avenue and crashed into a car. The collision sent both of the cars flying onto the sidewalk, slamming into family.

Following the crash that killed the three-month-old, Mott attempted to flee the scene by stealing a 2020 Hyundai from a 41-year-old man. When he was arrested, he allegedly asked the officers if he could just escape the incident with just a ticket or citation.
He was eventually charged with manslaughter, attempted robbery, reckless driving and other charges. Following his arrest, in February 2022 Mott posted a $150,000 bond, and was on the streets up until his recent sentencing hearing on Wednesday (June 14).
During his trial, he would go on to accept a plea deal that cut down a potential 15-year prison sentence, leaving him 9 years. During his sentencing hearing, he told the court, “I’m just sorry for everything I did. I’m sorry for all the hurt I caused. I really didn’t mean it.”
Prior to the incident, it is reported that Mott had been previously arrested three times, and had his license suspended. Mott’s list of 160 violations include him getting cited 91 times for speeding in a school zone since 2017. Out of the 91 citations, 35 of them were in 2021 alone.
According to the parents of the three-month-old killed, they revealed that they both had to undergo surgery after the crash. Guillemin was permanently disfigured and suffering from traumatic brain injury. Then in 2022, they filed a lawsuit again the city and Mott. The parents argued that the city violated its own Reckless Driver Accountability Act.
According to the 2020 law, police are required to impound any car with at least 15 speed-camera tickets or five red-light tickets during a 12-month period. So, the argued that the law definitely applied to Mott, who had obtained 160 traffic violations since 2017.
At the time of the lawsuit, Mott plead not guilty to manslaughter charges.
