Nick Cannon is crediting his ex-wife Mariah Carey for him being here today. He says he “probably wouldn’t be alive” if it weren’t for her supporting him after he learned of his lupus diagnosis.

While speaking on The Diary Of A CEO podcast, the 42-year-old entertainment mogul opened up about how his 54-year-old ex-wife and mother of his first set of twins, 12-year-olds Monroe Cannon and Moroccan Cannon, helped him cope when he was diagnosed with lupus in 2012, four years after they got married.

Speaking with the podcast host Steven Bartlett, Cannon recalled how he and Carey were in Aspen, Colorado when they found out. He said he was experiencing what he initially thought was a mere muscle cramp in his side, so he decided to go for a jog and work it out. However, when he got back to the house, he had passed out.

At the time, it was still believed that he was dehydrated or had simply experienced a minor altitude-related health incident. But after heading to a hospital, where he was given fluids, it was soon theorized that we might have had a potential kidney stone or kidney infection. Soon enough, Cannon was told that he had lupus. At this point, he said his life had been “changed forever.”

Cannon said, “It was a scary time. I didn’t understand it but we got it in order. I feel like I got a good hold on it now.”

Speaking on Carey being there for him after his lupus diagnosis, Cannon said, “She was my rock. She went hard. To be honest, I probably wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for how hard she went with the doctors, with me, my stubbornness.” He added, “[She] was the perfect helpmate, the perfect matriarch, the perfect mom, the perfect wife in those scenarios. Because granted, she’s who she is dealing with all the pressures of being Mariah Carey, but then being loving enough to take on all my stuff.”

He then admitted, “It probably took a toll on us just because of the person I was in my head and the struggles that I was dealing with. But it definitely brought us closer together.”

Cannon also opened up about the struggles he was facing at that time as well. He revealed that after receiving his lupus diagnosis, he questioned the meaning of life and began to wonder if he had “wasted” his time on Earth up until that point. He said he asked him, “If I get another shot what am I gonna do?”

The father of 12 admitted that he also wondered if he would even be alive for his children. He began to mentally review what his legacy would be.
