High School Basketball Star Mikey Williams Pleads Not Guilty To Gun Charges

High school basketball star, Miley Williams pleaded not guilty to multiple charges involving a shooting that allegedly took place at his home during a Thursday hearing in San Diego.

As we previously reported, Williams, 18, was taken into custody  on suspicion of five felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon. According to ESPN, Williams was released from custody on a $50,000 bond. the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported, “five people got into a car and as they were driving away, shots were fired.” The department says the car was hit but no one inside of the vehicle was hurt.

ESPN spoke on the situation saying, There are multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon against Williams, according to police documents, but he is likely to face one charge, per San Diego Sheriff’s Department Lt. Gavin Lanning. Williams is accused of violating California penal code Chapter 9, Section 245(a)(2), which involves “any person who commits an assault upon the person of another with a firearm.” The charge carries a maximum sentence of up to four years in prison.

Williams was already committed to go play college basketball for Memphis, but with this incident spreading across the news. Who knows if that will still be possible for him. In a statement, Memphis said it was “aware of the situation” and “gathering more information.” Per the San Diego Union-Tribune, Williams is due back in court on April 20.

As we stated, Williams is considered to be one of the top high school basketball prospects in the country.

Williams has been widely recognized for his impressive basketball skills and athleticism, with many basketball analysts and scouts comparing him to NBA superstar Russell Westbrook. He first gained national attention as a freshman in high school when he averaged 29.9 points per game and led his team to a 23-8 record.

In addition to his basketball talents, Williams has also used his platform to advocate for social justice issues, including the Black Lives Matter movement. He has also been vocal about his desire to see greater representation of Black athletes in college sports and has expressed interest in attending a historically Black college or university (HBCU) after high school.
